Crystal Caverns in Mexico

Crystal Caverns

Crystal Caverns

National Geographic recently published an article, Cavern of Crystal Giants.  The crystals were discovered in 2000 by two brothers were excavating in the mines Chihuahua, Mexico.  The crystals are massive and are up to 37 feet long.  It takes 20 minutes to get down to the caves the temperature is 112 degrees.  In order to go into the cave, the author had to put on a suit of hot pack and use oxygen because it is so hot in the caves.  The maximum amount of time people can be in the cave is 45 minutes, much longer and the heat could make it hard to breathe.  The cave was filled with water until 1985 when it was drained unknowingly.  Once the cave was drained, the crystals stopped growing.  The images are breathtaking.
