Lost in a Little Pond of Songs

Lost by ColdplayOne of the very first classes that I took in college for English was Introduction to Poetry. Until then, I liked poetry, but I wasn’t quite in love with it. That class started my love affair with poetry. The professor said that poetry was all around us and oftentimes, we didn’t even notice.

For example, music could be considered poetry. Lyrics have stanzas, sometimes they rhyme, they depend on rhythm, and sometimes they make no sense at all. Every once in awhile a song will speak to us and make us believe that this song was written just for us. Doesn’t poetry do the same?

The songs that I can’t get enough of are songs that inspire and resonate with me each time that I hear it. The song that has done this for me lately is “Lost” by Coldplay. I am a complete and utter Coldplay junkie. I love everything about them, but the number one thing has always been their lyrics. The lyrics are sometimes goofy, sometimes inspirational, and sometimes just plain weird. For some reason, I always feel like I completely understand them.

Lost

Just because I’m losing
Doesn’t mean I’m lost
Doesn’t mean I’ll stop
Doesn’t mean I would cross

Just because I’m hurting
Doesn’t mean I’m hurt
Doesn’t mean I didn’t get
What I deserved
No better and no worse

I just got lost
Every river that I tried to cross
Every door I ever tried was locked

Ohhh and I’m…
Just waiting ’til the shine wears off

You might be a big fish
In a little pond
Doesn’t mean you’ve won
Cause along may come
A bigger one
And you’ll be lost

Every river that you tried to cross
Every gun you ever held went off
Ohhh and I’m…
Just waiting until the firing stopped

Ohhh and I’m…
Just waiting ’til the shine wears off
Ohhh and I…
Just waiting ’til the shine wears off
Ohhh and I..
Just waiting ’til the shine wears off

What I completely love about the message of this song is that it reminds me that every single time I make a mistake, it does not encapsulate who I am. Those are moments in time; not who I am all of the time. The other message that I love (and, yes, there are two) is that every time I feel that I am being a complete know-it-all (yes, that has been prone to happen) – I’m not. The answer is in the middle and that’s who I really am.

Who knew Coldplay was so smart?

Do you have lyrics that inspire you?

Those are great lyrics. My personal song is by Matchbox 20. The chorus starts “I’m not crazy, I’m just a little unwell.” I wish I could remember the name. Your Coldplay song is probably a close second. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Cara ~ I know exactly what song your thinking of. It’s called Unwell. It’s the first song that made me take Matchbox 20 seriously.

    Here’s the video:

I love Coldplay :) I’ve been into them for years, and their songs continue to strike a chord. Plus, they put on an AMAZING live show!

Hi Alita – I couldn’t agree more about their shows. I don’t get out too often anymore, but for Coldplay, I’ll actually leave the house :)
