The Elusive Bookmark

I lose bookmarks all of the time. I have no idea where they go. I always think that I left it in the last book that I read, but somehow its never there. Kind of like socks. You think that you put two socks in they dryer, but when it comes time to fold clothes, one is always missing. I think the bookmarks and socks must be hiding in the same spot and laughing at me as I trudge through the house looking for them.

I’m kind of picky when it comes to bookmarks. I don’t like metal. I don’t like anything bulky. I don’t like a piece of string. I don’t like any two piece contraptions. I don’t like images of children (they creep me out when I’m reading a sex scene). I like a piece of paper that marks the last spot that I read, which frequently ends up being an insert from a magazine that asks you to renew for the low price of $9.95 per year. I used to always buy a bookmark with a new book, but over the years the ones that I like at the book store seem to be less and less. I do not want a picture of a dragon, fairy, cute baby animal, or Robert Pattinson.

So, I searched the internet to find some more sophisticated bookmarks and it was a bit of task, because New Moon paraphernalia has taken over the world.

Mata Hari

Mixed Media Art by Jennifer Gordon
Mata Hari Bookmark
Location: Etsy
Price: $1.00

I love, love vintage style images of people. The black and white, the clothes, the far off look in their eye, it all speaks of another world and is perfect for that worldly reading that you are doing.

Lisa Gabel Design

Location: Etsy
Six Bookmark Variety Set
Price: $12.00

I love the beautiful soothing images of this design. The rose is my favorite of the three pictured here. I also like how there isn’t any quotes, just the images.

Paisley Cat Designs

Paisley Cat Designs
Location: Etsy
Cats Quoteblox, Black Text on Kraft Background, set of 12
Price: $1.50

I love cats, but I have gotten a bit tired of the cute little kitten bookmarks. If I want to look at a cat, I’ll glance over at the one making my legs go numb. I love the block lettering on this bookmark and it definitely has the vintage feel that I’m currently in love with.

Monet_Amazon

Twelve Monet Bookmarks
Location: Amazon
Price: $1.50

I love art. I am the dork who buys the Monet calendar and stares blankly at it while I’m at work. In fact, I probably have done this more than I should. Any art on a bookmark may distract me from my book, but at least I won’t have to bear the shame if it’s Robert Pattinson.

Butterfly Bookmark

Hand Painted Butterfly Bookmark
Location: Barnes & Noble
Price: $14.95

This butterfly bookmark is perfect. It’s design is simple and understated as to not distract you from the last vampire read.

What bookmarks do you use? Do you have any favorites?

I used to use fancy bookmarks, now I use post-it notes. They’re sticky so they don’t fall out, and I can write notes on them about the book if I don’t have a notebook nearby. Not very exciting, but it works for me :)

Ha! “If I want to look at a cat, I’ll look over at the one making my legs go numb…” I love that. I feel the same way.

I love those Lisa Gabel bookmarks. I like the one with the bird best. And oh, how I love Etsy.

I use freebies from bookstores, old postcards people have sent me or that I have picked up on trips, or a crocheted bookmark given to me by my great aunt…whichever one is closest to me when I am ready to put the book down.

Hi Kim – I’ve used post-it notes, too! I pretty much will use anything that is within arms reach.

Hi Priscilla – I could get sucked into Etsy for hours and hours! That site has so many amazing things and I’m always so impressed with everyone’s creativity.

I love the idea of using old postcards that had never occurred to me to use them for bookmarks.

    LOL

I used to use one of my business cards that I had written a phone number on as a bookmark, but lately I’ve been using a lovely beaded bookmark I won in a giveaway. It’s really pretty, but I’m always worried I’m going to snag it on something and send beads flying all over the bus.

I really like those butterfly bookmarks. They’re so sweet & simple.

Hi Alita – I’ve had a beaded bookmark before and the beads did end up all over the place! My boys also had a dragon bookmark with beads on it and I was finding beads all over the house for a month. Hopefully, you are more careful than us :)
