dead_to_the_worldWhile returning home from work, Sookie Stackhouse finds a naked vampire running through the woods. Sookie stops to help the guy out and is shocked when she sees that it is an amnesiac Eric. Normally, Sookie doesn’t particularly care for Eric, but the Eric with no memory is far nicer than the one always trying to get down her pants. However, Sookie needs to find out who took Eric’s memory because it just might be the same person who kidnapped her brother.

Dead to the World is the fourth book in Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse series. When we last left Sookie, she had been betrayed by her vampire boyfriend Bill and she was still smarting a bit. Now with a new mystery to solve and another hot guy in her house, she’s forming a little bit of amnesia herself. Bill who?

Overall, I felt like Dead to the World was more of a plot device to get Sookie and Eric together. I know that there are legions of Eric fans out there, but this new pansy version of Eric was…well…kind of boring. I like the sarcastic Eric who can’t help but try to manipulate Sookie so she’ll take her clothes off. The intent behind his actions are always pretty clear, but he still did some pretty nice things for her. This new Eric always need to be protected and is a cling-on to Sookie. Who wants a boyfriend who is a cling-0n?

Apparently Sookie does because she falls hook-line-and-sinker for the whole thing. I found it more annoying than hot. I kept wondering where Bill went off to and when he was coming back. At least, he added some mystery to the book. Eric just fulfilled some weird mothering desire in Sookie.

As far as the mystery, well it wasn’t that interesting either. There is an introduction of some new kind of supernatural beings (two, actually) and if the past books are any indication of a theme, I can expect that there will be a new creature introduced and Sookie will have a new love interest in each of the following books. I hope not, because I’m going to get annoyed.

I’m addicted to this series. There is no denying that; so no matter what road Charlaine Harris decides to take me on, I’m going for the ride. I don’t always agree on where we are going but the scenery is interesting and that’s enough to keep me going for now.

I gave up on the first book after about 40 pages. So now I won’t have to be disappointed by this one. :-D

I gave up after the first book. I don’t know. There was just something about the writing that didn’t really draw me in. I thought the first book was okay, but not enough to want to read the rest of the series. I saw an episode of the HBO series and I thought that looked good, though. Unfortunately, I don’t have cable so I couldn’t make a habit out of watching it. A lot of folks like this series, though so I hope the next book goes better for you. =)

I will readily admit that this is not one of those books that are very deep, there isn’t metaphors or symbols, nor will it make you contemplate the characters when you are done. This series is pure junk food. These books probably will never be listed as one of my favorites, but it passes the time when I don’t feel like thinking.
